The mysterious Lord Ruthwen travels to Venice and strikes again, killing the beautiful Bettina and torturing her lover, Léonti, who swears to avenge her. He joins vampire hunters Aubrey and Nadoor Ali to search for the elusive monster... Cyprien Bérard's The Vampire Lord Ruthwen (1820) was the first sequel to continue John-William Polidori's 1819 ground-breaking story that had introduced the character of the handsome, but evil Vampire lord. Also drawing upon The Thousand and One Nights for inspiration, Bérard weaves stories of mystical Venice, Arabian Nights and Vampire legends into one exotic and suspenseful tale of revenge against the Undead. "A significant stepping-stone in the evolution of the modern image of the vampire, foreshadowing the other major thread of subsequent vampire fiction the seductive female vampire." Brian Stableford.

This is a rambling, yet interesting piece of literature that takes you on many different journeys within the story. It seems as if it's going off on tangents at times and yet manages to keep bringing you back to the main story line. One can't forget the time period it was written in (only 20 years after the French revolution). There is a melodramatic, almost operatic quality to the tales told by the characters - of which there is a fascinating array. I'm not sure how good the translation is; the language is archaic, yet lovely. I enjoyed reading it, but felt there were times that it genuinely lost sight of it's intention - Berard may have gotten carried away with his characters' backstories. Still, they were interesting as literary sketches. As a sequel to Polidori's "Lord Ruthven", . . . well, I'm not so sure; but it does stand on it's own. A must for all aficionados of Vampire Literature. I could see shades of Stoker's crew of men after Dracula in the group who chases after Ruthven. I'm sure Stoker must have read this. And it caused me to add a great word to my vocabulary: 'dolorous' - archaic and needs to be resurrected into common usage!Product details
